Today cellular technologies are growing so fast, and by only paid less from one a half million rupiah we could enjoy 3G facility in a cell phone. In the market, we would face so many 3G cell phone choices. Some bring slide mode, flip, and another have candybar concept. Four alternative choices are Sony Ericsson K770i, Nokia 3120 classic, Samsung SGH-L170, and LG KF311.

Design
LG come with slide mode, different from the others which have candybar style. Sony Ericsson K770i has a strong body with distinct nudge. The material is combination of metal and plastic. Nokia 3120 classic is dominated by plastic material colouring with pretty white milk and ergonomic design with curve nudge. Samsung SGH-L170 is the slimmest covered by metal just like Sony Ericsson. About keypad comfortability, there’s no problem in LG and Nokia. The alfanumerics button is made in a soft and big size. This is different with K770i and Samsung, the keypad size are small and hard to be pressed. Of course it would be annoying in the typing process.

Usually, multimedia cel phones are come with external memory slot, but this facility is only provided by LG with hotswap concept, while the others have to remove the backside cover first.

Display and Interface
The LCD perform of these cellphones are almost equal. Based on specification, Nokia has the highest colour intensity, but the facts showed that the perform just same with Sony Ericsson, LG and Samsung. They have bright colours and goodloooking display.

K770i, KF311 and L170 give us 262.144 colours transflectif screen with different picture resolutions. Sony Ericsson with 240 x 320 pixel, LG and Samsung are only 176 x 144 pixel. Automaticly, K770i gives more solid pictures. This is same with Nokia 3120c which has 16, 7 colours.
For mid-end level, 2 inch display screen is enough for a cellphone. This is due to Sony Ericsson, Nokia and LG. In Samsung L170, the slim body can’t give this facilitiy. So, sometimes it’s difficult to control the menus structure. Over all, every cell phone show their own brand character with new looks and more eyecatching.

Network
Network capability is one thing that have to be considered. With a friendly price, we could enjoy 3G facility from these cell phones. We could change the cell phones become PC internet modem, although they still only give UMTS network, but it is better than GPRS.

About features and modem setting process, each cell phone has different value. For example, Nokia 3120c doesn’t bring PC Suit CD and data cable in the package. So, we have to buy the USB by ourselves, then for CD, we could download it from the internet. The other rivals have come with these facilities in one package.

For installation and operation process as a modem, we only need to install the PC suit. Each vendor has integrate file management and modem function and we could see it in the internet browser icon. APN (Access Point Name) profile setting could be also done automaticly by wizard setting, but we could still setting it manually. About the network capability, it’s depend on the operators, hardware and software. In Samsung L170, when we try to open sites via PC browser, it respond slowly. So do with LG, but in Nokia and Sony Ericsson it perform better.

Multimedia
In this sector, Sony Ericsson perform better than the rivals. We could see that the entertaintment facilities is complete and perform better. In the camera side, it has 3.2 megapixel resolution, the largest than the others and it also provide photo and video editing features in PhotoDJ and VideoDJ. Beside that, it also has many audio files support. In second position is Nokia, while Samsung and LG just provide standart features.

Connectivity
The cell phones connection facilities just like mid-end cell phones in general. Bluetooth and data cable with equal perform. One plus point for SGH L170 and Nokia 3120c, the Bluetooth have support more protocol than LG and Sony Ericsson such support A2DP profile.

Application and Java
Nokia, Sony Ericsson, LG and Samsung, they all come with Java MIDP 2.0. definitely, this is wouldn’t be as wide as Symbian or Windows Mobile. But we could install the third party which support this operation system. LG KF311 and Samsung SHG L170 have direct features to world search engine portal, Yahoo and Google. So, the user could search many informations in real time include monitoring email account.

Battery
SE K770i has 930 mAh lithium polimer battery and could standby for 1-2 days once charging. Nokia 3120c come with 1000 mAh lithium ion and could standby for 2 – 2.5 days. Samsung SGH L170 has 880 mAh lithium ion with 1.5 – 2 days time for standby. Then, LG has 900 mAh lithium ion, standby for 1,5 – 2 days once charging in normal usage.

Conclusion
Sony Ericsson is perform better than the rivals. Beside having superior network, the facilities is more complete. Nokia is in the second position, at least the popular brand is familiar for the customers and the features could be balance with Sony Ericsson.

Samsung and LG more focus in the body appearances. But anyway, the features couldn’t be underestimated.
